BREAK OUT : 10-17 April 2003 : Interview With The Tribe Cast
Translator : Lisette

Why do you wear your tribal clothes and make-up to interviews?
James: We just did a photo shoot and decided to keep it on. But this Black lycra shirt is quite sweaty!
Antonia: People look at us weirdly when they see us like this!. They often think we're members of a creepy sect!
Meryl: The outfits are okay right now, they've looked weirder!
Antonia: I was quite shocked when I heard I had to dye my hair blue for the series, but I got used to it. We don't wear these clothes in our free time, by the way, we are not allowed to take them for ourselves...
Meryl: Only jewellery which they have double copies of. And if not we beg for it, because some of them are really cool!

There's only three of you here, there are more cast members touring aren't there?
James: That's right, but we've split up. The other four flew to Copenhagen when we flew to Amsterdam. But you won't hear me complaint that I'm stuck with these two girls! Meryl and Antonia are not that scary.

Tell us something about your part in the series.
James: I play Jay in the series, and he is moralistic. He wants to change the world, and works on that very seriously. But he does experience resistance.
Antonia: I play the part of Trudy, you know, the girl with the baby. The first thing I had to do in the series was giving birth to a baby! So I had to ask everyone which sound I had to make………Trudy is very emotional and somebody of extremes. She seeks someone who can calm her down.
Meryl: Ebony is the bad girl who steals everybody's boyfriends and who is always in trouble. She is very nasty.

Have you got something in common with the characters you play?
James: Jay is much more serious than I am. I frequently laugh, and that can be quite difficult. We have to do a lot of scenes again because I'm constantly laughing. It was not a coincidence that I played a clown in a high school drama before this series.
Antonia: I don't scream like Trudy does. I much more stable and I rather talk than fight. But in the part I play I can really live up!
Meryl: I want to be more independent, like Ebony is, but not that much.

There don't exist any adults in the tribe, would you be able to live like that?
James: I don't think you can live without them. Only your parents teach you already so much!
Meryl: I wouldn't know what to do without my mother, we're very close.
Antonia: When you're young it all seems very nice, deciding everything yourself, but I think the responsibility is way to confronting.

Do your parents watch the tribe?
James: My parents only watch because I'm in it, but the parents of my ex are addicted to it. Just like my brothers, twins of 16 year old. They think it's real cool their brother plays the hero.
Antonia: My parents don't watch because the series airs very early where we live. But they did buy the series on DVD.
Meryl: My mother gets up early to see it.
Antonia: My ex-teacher is a fan of mine. Every time she sees me she starts to cry. 'You're so good, and you used to be in my class, muuuuhh.'

Why is the tribe so addictive?
Antonia: Because it's unique, there is nothing like it.
James: It's new, and the idea is good. When you watch the tribe you start to ask yourself: what tribe would I be in? Moreover, everything looks very smooth. But it also deals with everyday issues like: rape and suicide…. .It's like a soap, you keep on watching it because you want to know how it ends.

If you could make up your own fantasy world, what would it look like?
James: A world without violence would be great. A world in which people respect each other and in which prejudices don't exist. And where anger does not appear in the dictionary.
Meryl: What about luxury? I would love to have my own island. Just relax and forget everything…
Antonia: Yes, that's a great idea! Then I would also like to have a theme park on my island. And a masseur haha!

The tribe airs in very many countries, how does that feel?
James: Very weird! You know that it airs in so many countries, but you don't realise it. With this tour we really get to see how many fans we have. While I don't even understand what most people are saying! Usually I can't come much further than Hi! And Thanks! But neither do the fans.
Antonia: I think it's great!
Meryl: I thought I would feel very lonely on tour, but with all these fans it just feels like a warm bath.

Have you got some 'behind the scenes' secrets for us?
Antonia: Ehm… May be it's nice to know that we've already used seven babies for my child. Those kids grow much to fast!
Meryl: I'm actually very short. You won't see that on TV, but when you see me next to James on screen, I'm standing on a small box. Otherwise I wouldn't come higher than his navel!
